Is it “Jackson” or “Jackson Hole”?

lobby-1500-web “Jackson” refers to the actual town of Jackson, which was incorporated in 1914. “Jackson Hole” refers to the entire valley area, including the communities of Wilson, Teton Village, Kelly, Moran, and Jackson.

The name references Davey Jackson, a beaver trapper of local fame, as well as a geologic feature called a hole, where the land continuously sinks due to plate tectonics. For many years, The Lexington’s home was referred to as “Jackson’s Hole” but, now, you’ll notice the old apostrophe has been dropped. So, both terms are accurate, depending on whether you are discussing the town or the valley area.
